IRIS Honours and Remembers Board Member Dr. Reidun Heiene

I met Reidun in the early nineties during the first meeting of ESVNU. She immediately showed her enthusiasm for veterinary nephrology and urology.

After that we met one or more time a year, during national and international meetings in Europe and US. Everyone instantly noticed her commitment to research, eagerness to learn, and willingness to share information.

Reidun’s professional carreer is well known in the scientific community. GFR has been always her focus on research. On this topic she developed her PhD at Norges veterinærhøgskole (NVH) in 1995 and further studies in UCDavis and Utrecht.

She also specialized in clinical research, internal medicine, clinical trials, public health, and healthcare. She has served as an active member of the IRIS Board since its founding in Vienna in 1998.

Reidun Heiene was also involved in many other activities. She excelled as a judoka; I recall her proudly telling me that she achieved second place in a national Judo competition in Norway.

Reidun worked in Afghanistan and Sudan where she volunteered her time to help younger children develop self confidence.

She was a devoted, beloved mother.

Reidun we will miss your energy, enthusiasm and joy of life.

Dr Claudio Brovida on behalf of the IRIS Board and nephrology community.

IRIS Honors and Remembers Board Member Dr. Sheri Ross

Sheri graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 1996 and went on to complete her Internship, Internal Medicine Residency and PhD in Nephrology and Urology at the University of Minnesota. After serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor in MN, she moved to the University of California Veterinary Medical Center in San Diego in 2006 to complete a Fellowship in Renal Medicine/Hemodialysis.

She remained with UC Davis as the coordinator of the Nephrology/Urology and Extracorporeal therapies program in San Diego. In 2022, Sheri returned home to the Atlantic Veterinary College (University of Prince Edward Island, Canada) where she pursued her passion in teaching veterinary medicine.

Dr. Ross was a founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology, an IRIS Board Member, and a Faculty member of the Hemodialysis Academy.

Sheri devoted over 30 years of her life to veterinary medicine and advocating for the well-being of animals. She presented lectures at multiple conferences across the world to spread her knowledge and passion. Sheri was an extremely valued colleague for many veterinarians, especially among the nephrology community, and was a thoughtful, kind, caring, and sincere friend.

Dr Ross will be greatly missed by her family, friends, her nephrology colleagues, and the greater veterinary community.

IRIS is proud to Honor and Remember Dr. David Polzin

Dr. David Polzin was one of the profession’s true leaders, thought provokers, innovators, and advocates. He was an active and long-time member of ACVIM (SAIM) and member and past officer of the ASVNU.

Dr. Polzin was also an important member of the IRIS Board and inspirational in development of many IRIS agendas since its inception.

Dr. Polzin was co-editor of the authoritative textbook, Nephrology and Urology of Small Animals.

He was substantially involved in the establishment of specialty designation for nephrology from its initiation and served as an organizer, founder, and honorary member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology (ACVNU).

Dr. Polzin’s considerable intellectual contributions have helped forge the current status and understanding of urinary disease in animals. His inspiration, leadership, and contributions will be greatly missed.
