Understanding Extracorporeal Renal Replacement Therapy (ERRT)

When a pet’s kidneys can no longer effectively filter waste products and toxins from the blood, extracorporeal renal replacement therapy (ERRT)—which includes hemodialysis and continuous or prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapies—can help perform this work. Although ERRT is a specialised procedure, it can be a life-saving bridge to recovery in selected patients, particularly those with acute kidney injury or certain toxin exposures.
